Agriculture and Natural Resource Economics
BGA supports Australia's agricultural sector by integrating economic analysis with environmental sustainability. We help organisations and government agencies understand the economic value of biodiversity, natural capital, and climate-smart practices. Our team applies advanced modelling and stakeholder engagement to deliver insights that support sustainable farming, resource use, and policy development.
Our recent work with the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) set a national foundation for valuing biodiversity in the grains industry. We also supported Meat & Livestock Australia in assessing water security for feedlots and worked with Hort Innovation to quantify the total value of Australia’s turfgrass industry.

This investment will conduct an opportunity analysis to identify risks and establish a biodiversity baseline for the Australian grains industry. The analysis will establish baseline data, identify future trends, and compare growers' data with stakeholder targets. The findings will guide the development of a biodiversity and natural capital research, development, and extension initiative for the grains industry. Read More!

The purpose of this project was to evaluate current and future feedlot water demands and to better understand the regulatory/policy concerns related to water in order to identify ways to ensure future feedlot water security. The final report combines the analyses from the Regulatory Assessment and the Water Demand estimation to propose recommendations for near-term and long-term feedlot water security in Australia. It also explores the relationship between turfgrass cover and urban heat island effects. The report shows that turfgrass provides significant annual benefits to Sydney and Melbourne. Read More!
