The Latest Trending Economic News Curated for You by Balmoral Group Australia

Good morning dear readers,

This week’s articles focus on new energy and infrastructural rollouts, along with a broad update on state’s economic performance. New research has identified prime locations for transmission lines linking new solar and wind projects to the grid amidst rollout delays. Additionally, new projects have been announced in the last 3 weeks for Disaster adaptation and community energy upgrades. Finally, ACT and Queensland are topping economic performance according to recent data.

New transmission towers are crucial for renewables – but contentious. Here’s where they should go

Recent research aims to identify the most beneficial corridors for transmission lines linking new wind and solar projects to the grid. High voltage alternating current (HVAC) lines were assessed along with high voltage direct current (HVDC) which are paving trails overseas but are as of yet unused in Australia. Research identified 147 possible HVAC corridors along Australia’s south and eastern coastline, and 20 potential HVDC corridors linking northern solar and wind farms to the southeast. This research responds to the lag in grid investments relative to generation. See below for a visualisation of options. Read more here

Successful projects under Round three of the Disaster Ready Fund

Round 3 of the Disaster Ready Fund spans 96 projects across all states and territories. Some of the largest projects include construction of a NSW stormwater pump station, an 800 person cyclone shelter on QLD’s Palm Island, flood levees in NSW and VIC, flood-proofing of VIC water and sewerage pump stations, and WA surge walls to combat seawater inundation. Successful projects under Round 2 of the Community Energy Upgrades Fund Program

New government funding to councils will electrify community pools, halls, libraries, sports centres and other public facilities. In NSW, $21 million is funding upgrades across 23 NSW councils; $10 million in Victoria, $5 million in WA, and $4.3 million in Queensland. Upgrades include solar panels, battery storage, EV charging, heat-pump heating and LED lighting and aim to cut energy bills, reduce emissions, and make public facilities more sustainable and affordable over the long-term. Increased generation capacity must be met with equivalent rollout of grid investments, although bolstering battery storage helps to stabilise the grid. Read more here

New data shows the ACT and Queensland economies are beating the rest of the nation

General economic data from the ABS shows that mining and manufacturing have retracted due to weather and disruptions, while services remained strong. This explains the ACT’s strong growth, as their industry is mainly service-based public administration and safety. High mineral prices and strong population growth spelled good fortune for WA, while agriculture has made large contributions everywhere except for SA, where drought detracted from production. Potential Sites for HVAC Transmission Lines

This map visualises new options for HVAC transmission lines in Australia. Line colour shows how much new solar and wind each corridor unlocks per dollar, with red being best. Thicker lines show where renewable resources line up better with times of peak electricity demand.
