The Latest Trending Economic News Curated for You by Balmoral Group Australia

Good morning, welcome to our latest updates and environmental economics insights.

This week we look at developments across fisheries, wetlands, biosecurity and energy. ABARES’ latest Fishery Status Reports find Commonwealth fisheries remain well managed, though declining data quality, climate change and illegal fishing pose growing risks. The Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder has passed 20,000 gigalitres of environmental water delivered across the Murray-Darling Basin since 2009, while DAFF’s third Biosecurity Funding and Expenditure Report brings the department’s biosecurity spending together in one place. On top of showing the Department's performance measures, the report highlights nine case studies to show the initiatives taken to strengthen Australia's biosecurity system. Finally, AEMO’s latest scorecard shows the pipeline of projects seeking to connect to the National Electricity Market now exceeds the grid’s existing capacity, led by a surge in batteries. I've also attached a figure from the ABARES agricultural commodities report showing the relative contribution of farmed and wild fish to total fisheries production.

Fishery status reports 2026

Last week ABARES’ Fishery Status Reports 2026 found that wild fisheries are stable; out of 107 Commonwealth stocks assessed, 66 were not overfished, 79 were not subject to overfishing and 65 met both criteria. The report flags declining data quality, climate change and illegal fishing as growing risks, and regulations are shifting towards Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management (EBFM), such as Western Australia’s permanent closure of the West Coast bioregion to commercial demersal (seabed) fishing, backed by a $20 million licence buyback, and halved catches in the Kimberley, Pilbara and South Coast. While wild fishery catches are constrained for ecosystem preservation, aquaculture continues to lead production value, contributing 58% of production value in 2026-27. Combined value is forecast to reach $4.0 billion in 2026-27 (from ABARES). Read more here.

20,000 gigalitres and counting: a milestone for healthier Basin rivers, wetlands and communities

The Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder has delivered more than 20,000 gigalitres of environmental water across the Murray-Darling Basin since 2009, roughly 40 Sydney Harbours. The water holdings are valued at $12 billion (at market prices for water entitlements) and 93% of available water has been delivered. Its science program reports that since 2014, deliveries have inundated over 470,000 hectares of wetlands and floodplains, flushed 4.3 million tonnes of salt and supported 11 Ramsar wetlands. Dr Simon Banks said the program has moved from single-site watering to coordinated, basin-scale events. He added that the benefits extend to regional communities, tourism and industry. Release of the Biosecurity Funding and Expenditure Report 2025-26

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has published its Biosecurity Funding and Expenditure Report 2025-26. This is the third year of dedicated reporting on how the department funds and spends on biosecurity. The report brings this financial information together in one place and adds new detail on departmental expenditure and national biosecurity emergency responses. Nine case studies show how funding supports the DAFF Biosecurity 2030 Roadmap. They span First Nations partnerships, offshore treatments, regional capability, workforce development, digital reform, emergency preparedness and diagnostic innovation (e.g. commercial avian influenza testing and point-of-care validation). Read more here.

Battery projects drive NEM connection pipeline

The Australian Energy Market Operator’s (AEMO’s) latest Connections Scorecard shows 80.9GW of generation and storage seeking connection to the National Electricity Market. That is up 43% in a year and exceeds the National Electricity Market's (NEM's) 77GW capacity for the first time. Grid-scale batteries make up 55% of the pipeline, and nearly 40% of battery projects offer 3 to 10 hours of storage. However, 88% of capacity remains in early stages, and only 1.3GW reached full output in the September quarter. With about 15GW of generation retiring within a decade and demand forecast to rise over 40%, AEMO stressed the need to move viable projects through to commissioning. Read more here.

Australian Fisheries Production

These figures from the ABARES Agricultural Commodities Report 2026 display current and project value of wild and farmed fishery production. both panels show real annual value, with the left panel showing production breakdown for both fisheries and aquaculture production by commodity, and the right showing shares of production.
