The Balmoral Brief

Hello Readers!

This week's first article highlights that NSW councils have received funding to use artificial intelligence to speed up the processing of development applications. Ending native forest logging would reduce greenhouse emissions more than planting new trees. It would also contribute to preserving biodiversity and reducing habitat losses.

The electricity grid does not have room for nuclear power unless renewables are switched off. Finally, stroads which are cross between roads and streets are disasters of urban planning.

The video of the week looks at cleaning up plastic waste. Have a great weekend!

Councils funded to use AI for development applications

Sixteen NSW councils have received state government funding to use artificial intelligence to speed up development applications. Read more here.

Ending native forest logging would help Australia’s climate goals much more than planting trees

Australia contains some of the world’s most biologically diverse and carbon-dense native forests. Eucalypts in wet temperate forests are the tallest flowering plants in the world and home to an array of unique tree-dwelling marsupials, rare birds, insects, mosses, fungi and lichen, many of which have not even been catalogued by scientists. Yet our country remains in the top ten list globally for tree cover loss, with almost half of the original forested areas in eastern Australia cleared. Read more here.

No room for nuclear power, unless the Coalition switches off your solar

Before renewables came along, coal-fired power stations pumped out electricity (and carbon emissions) 24 hours a day. But now, this type of “always on” baseload power is no longer necessary or commercially viable. Read more here.

Have you ever walked or ridden a bike along a street, and thought to yourself, “Gosh, it’s noisy”, or “This feels unpleasant”? Odds are you were on a stroad. Read more here.
